GEL WAX CANDLES

HOW TO MAKE A GEL WAX CANDLE IN SIX EASY STEPS

Step One
	Cover your work surface with newspaper. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to determine which size wicking and wick clip to use. To determine how much wicking to use, measure the depth of the container and add 2”. String the wick through the clip and crimp the clip with pliers.

Step Two

Straighten the wick with your fingers, then place the wick clip in the centre bottom of the container. Add marbles, rocks, or other embedded items to weight the wick clip. (If no embedded items are to be used, dip the clip in heated gel. Press onto the bottom centre of the container and allow to cool.) Place the craft stick or dowel across the opening of the container and wrap the top of the wick around it. Secure with a piece of tape.

Step Three
	Chop the gel into 1” - 2” pieces, place it in a pan and heat following the manufacturer’s instructions. Heat until it is completely melted, stirring frequently, monitoring the temperature with a thermometer. Do not allow the gel to exceed the recommendation of the manufacturer as it may catch fire. Keep baking soda nearby in case of fire. Do not microwave.

Step Four

Dye may be added when the gel is nearly melted. Add the dye to a small amount of gel and blend. Add to the remaining gel until the desired colour is reached. Stir thoroughly to achieve a uniform colour. To determine what the colour will look like, either pour into a clear container or place a few drops onto white paper. If fragrance is desired, add the scent one drop at a time just before pouring into containers.

Step Five
	Pour the candle. Using a pour spout pan makes it easier to fill candle containers. The gel can also be transferred to a heat resistant, glass measuring jug for easier pouring.

Step Six

Allow the candle to cool. Avoid moving the candle while the gel is cooling. Once the candle is cool, trim the wick to ¼”. The size and shape of your candle will determine the length of time the candle will burn. Do not allow candles that contain embedded items to burn closer than ½” to the embedded objects. Do not allow any of the candles to burn to the bottom of the container. When a candle is completely burned, scoop out the remaining gel and wash the container with hot soapy water. It can be used to make another candle.
