SOAP MAKING

With today’s new soap making products, it is easy to create soaps that look like you bought them from a gift shop or a bed & bath shop. But it is even better because you can make custom bars with your favourite scents and colours. When you start your soap making process with ready-made soap bases, the hardest part is already done for you. All you have left to do is the fun part. Choose hundreds of mould shapes, decide what designs you want your soap to be, and have fun sniffing out just the right fragrance. You might even want choose a special additive for your soap such as lavender seeds, chamomile flowers, or oatmeal. In just a matter of minutes you can create wonderful soaps for your home or for special gifts.

SOAP BASE

Take as much Soap Base as required and place into a large bowl. Add extra ingredients from your kitchen cupboard depending on the style or type of soap you wish to make. Add a few drops of essential oil or fragrance. Stir together and then add enough hot water to make a stiff mix. To colour the soap, natural food colouring may be added with the water. Squeeze the mixture until it is smooth and the ingredients are well blended. Roll into balls the size you require or pat out flat and cut into shapes. For a stronger perfume, smooth the surface with a little of the fragrance. Leave to dry for 24 hours before using.

Your soap can include any of the following ingredients from the kitchen cupboard.
Use only small amounts to begin as it is easy to add more.

• Oatmeal
• Bran
• Milk Powder - either skim or full cream
• Coconut
• Sunflower Oil
• Liquid honey
• Cream
• Herbs

Poppy or Sesame Seeds

Some suitable essential oils are :

Lavender, Rose, Cinnamon, Jasmine, Geranium and Tea tree.

• Melt in the microwave or in a double boiler.
• Add colours, fragrances and any desired additives.
• Pour into a mould and allow to set.

SOAP DECALS

• Cut around desired decal design by cutting approximately ¼” halo around the image.
• Place decal in a shallow bowl of warm water for approximately 30 seconds.
• While the decal is soaking, dip the tip of your finger in the water and lightly wet the area of the soap where the decal will be put. This will make the decal slide on easier.
• Carefully take the decal out of the water with the paper backing still attached and place it on the soap. Lightly hold one edge of the decal in place and slide the paper backing out from under the image.
• While the decal is still wet, carefully adjust it and smooth out any wrinkles or air bubbles with the tip of your finger and gently dab off excess water with a paper towel. The decal is very fragile at this point. Handle delicately.
• Allow soap and decal to dry completely before using.

NOTE: Decals will come off the soap if scratched, gouged, or handled too roughly. Otherwise they should last throughout the life of the soap.

Make your own moulds with this food grade silicone - odour free, non-toxic and FDA compliant. The finished moulds are flexible, reuseable, have no shrinkage, are self-releasing (with most uses) with a heat range up to 204 degrees Celsius (400 F).

Silicone Putty is ideal for impression moulds. Putty has a 3 minute work time with a 25 minute cure.

Silicone Rubber is brushable and pourable to create blanket, glove or block moulds. This has a 45 minute to 1 hour working time with a 24 hour cure which can be adjusted by applying heat.
