DECOUPAGE

Decoupage originated in Venice in the 1750's, where it was known as lacca povera (poor man's lacquer) or l'arte del povero (the poor man's art).

At that time the artists of the day simply couldn't keep up with the demand for lacquered work.  Several printers produced sheets of engravings specially for lacca povera decoration. These were coloured, cut, and then pasted onto prepared surfaces. They were then varnished many times to resemble the high gloss of lacquer decoration on items such as desks, chairs, tables, cabinets and screens. The furniture resembled the fine hand painted imports of Japan and China.

From Italy the technique moved on to France where it was re-named Decoupage, from the French word couper, to cut. Thus Decoupage, as we know it today, was born.
